Dirt is not ballistic gel..

But I put this one in the ground to see what it would do.

penetrated ~7 or 8 inches

Sorry about the quality - I didn't feel like getting out the good camera.

rounds across the top L to R are 9mm, .40 and 2 .45's

I'm considering trading in my G30 for a full size .45 because w/ such a short bbl - penetration and expansion aren't what they could be.

I've found myself deferring to carrying the full size 9mm more often and when I can because of that.

JJ, I have had good expansion with Speer Gold Dot +P in both calibers...

I have shot the Hydrashock into ballistics gel and it is a good performer, less exspansion than into dirt but also much better penetration. I have shot most of the well know defensive rounds and the majority all perform about the same with just a few exceptions. One big area where many HPs fail is car door penetration, the Corbon is the best in this area.

It all comes down to shot placement...put the bullet where it needs to go and they will work.

That's is the key. Everything else is a bonus but without good placement you won't get a reliable stop.
